First Annual Military River Parade – “Here’s to our Heroes”

With four distinct military bases employing 90,000 men and women, San Antonio proudly boasts the title of “Military City, USA.” May 19 is National Armed Forces Day, and San Antonio will celebrate all branches of the Armed Forces at the inaugural Here’s to Our Heroes Military River Parade on the River Walk.

The parade will begin with an opening ceremony at the Arneson River Theater at 3 p.m. It will feature 25 themed floats, decorated by their sponsor participants, that pay tribute to the men and women of the active military, veterans, military support groups and more. Appropriately, even our River Walk has a military connection, having been designed by Robert H. H. Hugman, a former Randolph AFB employee.

As a special tribute to the Armed Forces, the City of San Antonio will dye the river blue for the event. Yellow ribbons will proudly adorn the parade route, purchased by the community in honor of those who have served or are currently serving our great nation.

Here’s to our Heroes is presented by the Paseo del Rio Association and the City of San Antonio. For the best view of the event, tickets can be purchased at for $10 or $15. However, it is free to view from the patios and balconies of River Walk restaurants and pedestrian walkways.
