Congressman Henry Cuellar was given the “Spirit of Enterprise” award, a national honor granted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Monique Thierry, Executive Director Southwest/South Central Region Office of Congressional & Public Affairs from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, presented Congressman Cuellar with his award at The Greater Chamber on May 2.

The U.S. Chamber designates key votes in both the Senate and the House of Representatives and records floor votes on issues established as priorities. Senators and House members who support the Chamber’s position on at least 70 percent of the votes receive the award. Congressman Cuellar maintained an 88 percent rating with the U.S. Chamber this year.

In his remarks, the congressman said he was honored to receive the award and then he discussed the value of repealing the 1099 reporting requirements and the three percent withholding from contractors. As Chairman of the Pro-Trade Caucus, he also noted the importance of passing the recent free trade agreements and how that will bring jobs and income to businesses throughout Texas, the largest exporting state in the nation.

Congressman Cuellar noted that cutting taxes and eliminating burdensome regulations are two of the most important tools the federal government can utilize to promote economic growth. He acknowledged his support of the Keystone Pipeline legislation and candidly discussed the need for Congress to move past partisanship, make hard decisions and pass quality legislation.

Additionally, the congressman bade farewell to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, saying that she will be greatly missed. He hopes that her successor will follow her lead in always seeking the best for Texas citizens.
