Chamber Hosts IT Professionals for Information Security Event

The Chamber, in partnership with the South Texas Chapter AFCOM and the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, hosted “Building a Secure Infrastructure for Texas and the Nation” on April 20. This day-long event focused on critical infrastructure at data centers and within state agencies; it produced discussion among business, academic and state officials regarding how the community can work together to achieve greater information security and information assurance.

Karen Robinson, Executive Director of the State’s Department of Information Resources (DIR), opened the conference and and talked about the results that she would like to see come out of the discussion. Robinson and State Senator Leticia Van de Putte began with a discussion on the Texas Cybersecurity Education and Economic Development Council. This past legislative session, Senator Van de Putte was instrumental in setting up this state-level council that will produce a report to send to the Governor and other legislators regarding the state’s critical infrastructure, continued economic development in the cybersecurity industry, and focus areas needed for future workforce development programs.

The event brought members of the Council from around the state to San Antonio to discuss how private business, academic leadership and the DIR can better work together to protect the state’s critical infrastructure, grow tomorrow’s cybersecurity and information assurance workforce and spread best practice models across Texas.

The event featured local academic leaders from universities and colleges, business leaders, and data center managers from South Texas. This event allowed The Chamber to engage the data center community, which has grown significantly in San Antonio over the past decade, and to show those business leaders the work that has been done on the San Antonio Cyber Action Plan over the past three years.
