Event Description

Earth without art would just be, "Eh," and no one wants to live in a yawn-inducing universe. Join us at Art in The Chamber, and wake up your world with bold paintings and striking photographs from UTSA student artists.

Libby Rowe, UTSA Assistant Professor, Photography
Libby earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Syracuse University (1996) and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of Northern IA (1993). Libby has an extensive exhibition history including a show in 2010 at the Galleria del Grifo e l’Associazione Culturale in Montepulciano, Italy. The photography included in Obstruction Deconstruction is from her playful series Obscured Views. Instead of photographing traditional postcard images of famous tourist sites she decided to capture how people interact with these locations and how these views often become obscured by humans or their constructions such as trains, port-a-potties, or cars.

Elyse Blechman, UTSA BFA Student
Elyse Blechman is an undergraduate student majoring in both Painting and Art History and Criticism at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her current work investigates rituals of recollection and the manner in which individuals document memories. She depicts manipulations of family photographs, found images, and film stills in an attempt to address the ephemeral memory and fragility of recollection. Her paintings create a narrative for the viewer rooted in the contrast of our desire to harness moments in our lives with the ever-present fear of forgetting.

Tsun-Chuan Liang, UTSA MFA Student
Tsun-Chuan Lang acquired her Bachelor of Fine Arts from National Taiwan University of Art (2006). Her work has been showcased in Taiwan and San Antonio, and has won various awards, including first place in the UTSA FAA Lone Star Exhibit. Her paintings are a combination of memory, perception, and self-identification. They express the feelings of somebody who has grown up in a different culture trying to fit into an unfamiliar environment. The floral patterns on the crouching human bodies allude to her Taiwanese upbringing, as they were often used in the past for decorating linens, bed sheets, and blankets.

Jessica Battes, UTSA Alumnus, MFA 2012
Jessica Battes earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of North Texas (2008) and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio (2012) where she is currently teaching. Her work has been featured in local and national venues and has won several awards, most recently a NICHE award. Her prints reflect her continued fascination with spontaneous generation and modern cell theory. In her reflections on genes and DNA, Jessica questions what they might look like, how they would move within cells, and how they function biologically. By creating these pieces in a more life-size scale, she reinforces the real connection between these forms and ourselves.

Natalie Steele, UTSA MFA Student
Natalie Steele received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Houston (2011). Her paintings draw on her experiences with Hurricane Ike when the devastating occurrence left extreme damage to the buildings and most of Galveston homeless. She creates surfaces that take on the role of molds and oil spills, capturing both the destructive and dangerous as well as the beautiful and delicate aspects of these elements. Her drawings are inspired by the sensual, organic lines that the body creates, and turning the familiar into divergent forms.
